During the summer of 2017 the Community Services division of the Police Department coordinated the facilitation of a “Summer Youth Program” juvenile feeding and outreach program in conjunction with Florida Impact. This 6 week program not only provided nourishment to at-risk children (ages 6-14) within our community, but also provided enrichment through daily safety presentations, reading and mentoring, arts and crafts, and sports activities. Coral Springs Police personnel staffed and operated the program, coordinating volunteers, providing educational and recreational components, sports activities, and food distribution. High school students and community volunteers were also recruited to assist with the daily operations. The 2019 program was held at James Hunt Elementary School. Staff is seeking to reinstitute the “Summer Youth” program this coming summer and years ahead, a dedicated funding source would help with the continuance and possible expansion of the “Summer Youth” program.
The camp started on June 22, 2021 and currently has 75 kids registered. We have 140 teen volunteers assisting with the camp. Media Day has been scheduled and we are partnering with a local church for uniforms.
