Currently, the City of Coral Springs is one of the two cities in Broward County which do not utilize same type of camera system in relation to policing. The need to document incidents via body worn or in-car cameras has become increasingly standardized. Due to this, the State’s Attorney Office is beginning to rely heavily on body worn cameras video to obtain convictions. Additionally, the need to convey an accurate account of police related activity to the public has become vital. It is the duty of the City of Coral Springs to provide its residents with accurate and detailed descriptions of incidents which take place within the jurisdictional limits of the City of Coral Springs. Body worn camera systems will provide a more in-depth approach to managing investigations related to the Coral Springs Police Department.
When the police department decided to move forward with the implementation of body worn cameras, there was also the opportunity to combine license place reader technology (LPR) in officer’s vehicles if available by the vendor.
The vendor that was selected as a result of the RFP process is in the testing of LPR software to accompany their body worn cameras. It is something we will continue to evaluate but is not an option at this time.
The original initiative for body-worn cameras has been completed. A secondary consideration was to provide SROs with body cameras, however, that has not been decided on at this time.
